Richard McCormick of Granada Hills was not affected by the numerous delays in the 20-lap Three-Quarter Midget main event at Ventura Raceway.

McCormick, who started on the pole after winning an eight-lap heat race, was passed on the first lap by Steve Kellick of Colorado Springs, but Bryan Stanfill of Bakersfield stalled in the second turn to force a caution period, and McCormick regained his position.

There was a 45-minute delay after the third lap when Chris Hedge of Camarillo flipped his car at the entrance to the pits and was knocked unconscious.

Although the car’s roll cage was apparently undamaged, it took safety crews approximately 15 minutes to remove Hedge from the car before transporting him to Ventura County Medical Center.

When the race restarted, it was all McCormick, who opened up a one-third lap lead on the field and wasn’t challenged.

In the 30-lap Midget feature, Billy Boat of Phoenix became the third driver in U.S. Auto Club history to win seven consecutive races. He tied the record held by A.J. Foyt and the late Billy Vukovich III.
