Pinch-hitter Dwight Smith hit a two-run single off Jim Gott to break a 10th-inning tie and carry the Atlanta Braves to a 3-1 victory Tuesday over Pittsburgh in a game marred by a violent collision between Pirate outfielders Dave Clark and Jacob Brumfield at Three Rivers Stadium.

Clark broke his left collarbone and Brumfield suffered cuts and bruises as they ran into each other chasing Jeff Blauser’s fifth-inning drive into right-center field. Brumfield made a spectacular catch before slamming into the artificial turf.

The game was stopped for 23 minutes as an ambulance was brought onto the field and both players were treated. Clark also lost a tooth and suffered facial cuts, and Brumfield injured his left hamstring.

“They got smoked, they really did,” Pirate Manager Jim Leyland said. “It was one of the worst things I’ve ever seen on the baseball field. We were worried because it could have been worse--a lot worse.”

Gott (1-3) took the loss. Brad Clontz (6-1) pitched out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the eighth for his second victory in as many days, and Mike Stanton struck out pinch-hitter Mark Johnson with the bases loaded in the 10th for his first save since July 15, 1994.

St. Louis 8, New York 11--Brian Jordan hit two 400-foot home runs and singled home the winning run in the 11th inning to lead the Cardinals at St. Louis.

The Mets hit four home runs. Jeff Kent tied a career high with four hits, including a two-run homer, Rico Brogna had two doubles and a homer, and Edgardo Alfonzo and Bobby Bonilla added solo shots for New York.

Tom Henke blew his first save opportunity of the season after 22 consecutive conversions for St. Louis.

Philadelphia 7, Colorado 6--Charlie Hayes, hitless in his previous 31 at-bats, singled home the winning run in the 10th inning as the Phillies defeated the Rockies at Philadelphia.

Run-scoring singles by Gregg Jefferies and Andy Van Slyke in Philadelphia’s half of the inning tied the game until Hayes’ winning hit in the 10th.

Florida 9, San Francisco 3--Bobby Witt retired the first 14 batters for his first victory since May 13, and the Marlins scored four runs in the first inning and set a team record with four triples at Miami.

Witt (2-7) gave up seven hits, struck out eight and walked one in his first complete game since July 13, 1994, with Oakland. Steve Decker drove in three runs with a single, a triple and his first homer in 198 at-bats.
