Fire Scorches 1,000 Acres in Tejon Pass

A fire blackened 1,000 acres of brush on a hillside in the Tejon Pass on Wednesday, authorities said.

It took three helicopters and about 200 Los Angeles County firefighters to put out the blaze, which started about 2:15 p.m. three-quarters of a mile south of Gorman, to the east of the Golden State Freeway, said county Fire Department Supervisor Cheryl Patterson.

The cause of the fire, which burned until 8:41 p.m., was under investigation. Patterson said there did not appear to be any injuries and no homes were threatened.

To the east, another 1,000-acre fire temporarily closed Interstate 15 in the Cajon Pass. Three northbound lanes on the highway were reopened at 7 p.m. when the fire near Hesperia was 50% contained, said Lenore Will, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Forest Service.

The California Highway Patrol temporarily closed Cajon Pass and about seven miles of Interstate 15 between Highway 138 and Oak Hill Road because of thick smoke on the roads.
