BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Hill May Be Headed to the Indians

The St. Louis Cardinals are reportedly about to trade pitcher Ken Hill to a contending team, possibly the Cleveland Indians, today.

Hill is making $4.37 million but is a disappointing 6-7 with a 5.06 earned run average in his second tour with the Cardinals.

Dave Clark, injured in a scary crash with Pittsburgh Pirate teammate Jacob Brumfield Tuesday, says he blacked out before his head rammed violently into the outfield wall.

Clark, expected to miss six to eight weeks, broke his left collarbone, badly loosened a tooth and sustained various cuts. The Pirates’ medical staff said he never passed out. But Clark is not convinced.

“I think now I actually did lose consciousness,” he said. “I don’t remember hitting the wall at all.”

Chicago White Sox Manager Terry Bevington and Milwaukee Brewer Manager Phil Garner were suspended for four games for fighting and setting off a bench-clearing altercation during a July 22 game in Chicago. Garner’s suspension begins today, but Bevington will manage pending an appeal hearing. . . . Darryl Strawberry and the New York Yankees are close to completing a contract, the team acknowledged without saying when he might join the club. Strawberry, who has a minor league contract, is batting .308 with five home runs and 20 RBIs in 13 games for triple-A Columbus. . . . The Philadelphia Phillies put pitcher Kyle Abbott (sore left shoulder) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled pitcher Mike Williams from triple-A Scranton-Wilkes-Barre.
