HOW HOT WAS IT?: The second consecutive day of 100-plus temperatures, above, shattered records in the Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys and baked residents of the San Fernando Valley (B1). . . . One of the most popular spots was the drive-through Baskin-Robbins in Burbank. Said assistant manager Rochele White: “I don’t even want to leave the store until it cools off.”

EN ROUTE: Suspected computer hacker Kevin Mitnick is on his way back to Los Angeles to face government charges, the U. S. attorney’s office said Friday. . . . The former North Hills resident allegedly broke into computer systems, copied millions of dollars in software, and obtained 20,000 credit card numbers during two years eluding FBI agents. Mitnick, captured in North Carolina in February, will first face charges for violating terms of his supervised release.

DEJA VU: One squad was national champion last year. Another is striving to make a name for itself. . . . The Northridge Little League 12- and 13-year-old squads begin divisional tournaments today in a march toward the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. (C10).

SKY SHOW: The summer’s best meteor shower, the Aquarids, can be seen above the Valley through Aug. 3, when the first-quarter moon reappears. . . . From a dark sky sight, an observer may see as many as 20 meteors per hour, according to the Griffith Observatory. The meteors--bits of comet dust--strike the Earth’s atmosphere three times faster than an orbiting space shuttle.

A DIFFERENT TUNE: The first singing telegram was delivered 62 years ago Friday for singer Rudy Valle’s 32nd birthday. But it’s a fading sound in the Valley. . . . Five years ago, some 40 singing telegram companies operated in Los Angeles and the Valley. “Now only a handful remain,” said one Valley singing telegram operator. The reason, he said: “the economy.”
