Jim Courier, who has not advanced past the quarterfinals of any of the three Grand Slam events this year, was given a wild-card entry and seeded third Friday in the Infiniti Open tournament, which begins Monday at UCLA’s Los Angeles Tennis Center.

Courier joins Jimmy Connors, four-time L.A. tournament champion, as wild-card players in the 32-man singles draw, and the two will play together in the 16-team doubles competition. The singles schedule has yet to be determined, but Courier and Connors will play their first doubles match Wednesday night.

Courier has won four Grand Slam singles titles and was ranked No. 1 in the world for 17 weeks in 1993, when he won the second of his two Australian Opens. Courier also won the French Open in 1991 and ’92 and was a finalist at the U.S. Open in 1991 and at Wimbledon in 1993.

Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia is seeded first and Michael Stich of Germany second.

No. 46-ranked Aaron Krickstein and No. 65 Chuck Adams have withdrawn.
