SILVERLAKE : Accident Prompts New Safety Measures

Share

In response to the death of a pedestrian June 11, traffic control devices and a new jogging and strolling path will be put in place on several streets near Silver Lake Reservoir.

For years, residents have called for increased safety measures near the reservoir, a playground for joggers, cyclists and strollers. They have cited the hazards of speeding and reckless driving on nearby streets.

On June 11, Diane Manahan, 59, was struck by a car at Hawick Street and West Silver Lake Drive while walking with her husband.

A temporary flashing yellow light will be installed in the next four months at the intersection of Van Pelt Drive and Silver Lake Boulevard, said David Hershey-Webb, a representative of Los Angeles City Councilwoman Jackie Goldberg.

A jogging and strolling path will be constructed along West Silver Lake Drive and Silver Lake Boulevard. Joggers and strollers now walk in the street along the same route. The path should be finished in two months.

“It’s very, very sad that it takes a death to get some of these safety measures installed,” Hershey-Webb said.

Measures to be completed by Aug. 15 include a pedestrian crosswalk sign north of Van Pelt Drive, and all-way stop signs at Hawick Street and West Silver Lake Drive and at Armstrong Avenue and West Silver Lake Drive.
