Newcomer Must Work With Board

Share

* While I read with interest your July 23 article about an alleged rift in the Thousand Oaks school board, the fact is that you have it completely wrong.

After nine years of elected service on the board, I resigned just a year ago to move to the beach. My replacement, Elaine McKearn, has been on the board now just over six months. She won in the election with a big vote after vowing she would make major changes if she got on the board. Now she is frustrated because she is finding out that there is little opportunity to make her mark as a crusading individualist.

McKearn would do well to curb her appetite for personal glorification and join in with the hard work of keeping the system effective under difficult circumstances. When she learns a little more about what boards can and cannot do, I predict she will come to appreciate just how hard working and effective the present board is. And then maybe she can become an effective part of it.
