GOLF ROUNDUP : Irwin Nearly Flawless in Senior Open Victory

Hale Irwin, who has played in five senior events since turning 50 on June 3, shot a six-under-par 66 on Sunday, winning the Ameritech Senior Open at Aurora, Ill., by seven strokes with a tournament-record 21-under 195 on the Stonebridge Country Club course.

Irwin, who opened with rounds of 66 and 63, shattered the tournament mark of 200 set by Mike Hill in 1991.

“I think I’m playing every bit as good as I’ve ever played,” Irwin said.

Kermit Zarley shot a 68 to finish second at 202. Dave Stockton was third at 204.

Fred Funk, who started the day with a four-stroke lead, held on to beat Jim McGovern at the Ideon Classic at Sutton, Mass.

Funk’s two-over 73 gave him a 16-under 268.

McGovern shot 70 to finish one stroke behind at 269. Don Pooley was third at 270.

Becky Iverson, who never finished better than 13th in an LPGA tour event, won the Friendly’s Classic at Agawam, Mass., shooting a two-under 70 for a two-stroke margin over Kelly Robbins and Helen Alfredsson.

Robbins, who began the round tied with Iverson, finished with a 72. Alfredsson shot a 69.

Scott Hoch shot a six-under 65 to win the Dutch Open at Hilversum, Netherlands, by two strokes.

John Daly, fresh off his victory a week earlier in the British Open, had a final-round 72 to finish 14 strokes back.

At 15-under 269, he became the first American to win the title since Payne Stewart in 1991.

An 80-foot putt for an eagle at Portrush, Northern Ireland, gave Brian Barnes the British Seniors Open title on the third hole of a playoff with Bob Murphy.
