An 18-month-old was killed and her mother was injured Saturday when a fire engine returning to the station struck their car as the mother turned left in front of it, a Sheriff’s Department official said.

Rebecca Ibarra of Stanton was pronounced dead at Western Medical Center-Anaheim shortly after the 1:41 p.m. accident. Isadora Ibarra, 32, was in good condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange, a nursing supervisor said.

Ibarra was driving west on Cerritos Avenue and turned left onto Knott Avenue as the fire engine approached, Sheriff’s Lt. Jay Mendez said.

Mendez said the Orange County Fire Authority truck was moving at the speed limit, but the 42,000-pound truck could not make an abrupt stop.

The girl was found in the rear passenger compartment of the 1978 Oldsmobile with severe injuries, Mendez said. A child’s car seat was in the car, but it was unclear to investigators whether the toddler had been fastened in it at the time of the accident.

None of the engine crew was injured, Mendez said.
