Postal Workers Protest Unsafe Conditions

Share

About 100 current and former postal workers picketed Monday to protest management practices and employee safety at a mail processing facility in the City of Industry.

Chanting “What do we want? Justice! When do we want it? Now!” they paced back and forth on a sidewalk in the 15400 block of Gale Avenue. Workers and previous employees from Glendora, Upland and La Puente cheered when trucks--and one mail carrier--honked in support as they passed by.

Steve Millard, once a mail carrier at the Glendora facility who helped organize the rally, said it was not associated with the National Assn. of Letter Carriers or the American Postal Workers Union. He said they chose to demonstrate at the City of Industry plant because a postal worker was shot there July 9.

The protesters asked for a congressional investigation into management practices, which they called “antiquated” and “inhumane.” Some complained that supervisors restrict talking among fellow employees during work hours and pressure them to take short bathroom breaks.
