Daniel E. Keen, 36, assistant city manager of Norwalk in Los Angeles County, has been selected La Palma’s new city manager.

His appointment was announced Tuesday night by the City Council after a five-month, nationwide search that drew 80 applicants.

Keen begins his new job Sept. 18, succeeding Pamela Gibson, who resigned in April to become city manager of Sonoma.

Len Wood, an urban consultant from Los Angeles County, has been interim city manager. He was not a candidate for the full-time position.

Mayor Wally D. Linn hailed Keen’s selection, saying the council found him to be the best candidate for the position: “This is the person we’re going to rely on.”

City officials said Keen’s yearly salary will be $91,000.

Keen has worked for Norwalk since 1988, as director of urban planning, deputy city manager and assistant city manager. Before that, he worked for the city of Paramount for five years.
