Fire Razes Mobile Home, Damages a 2nd

One double-wide mobile home was destroyed Friday and another damaged during a late-morning fire in Oxnard, firefighters said.

The fire was reported about 11:45 a.m. in the Standard Pacific mobile home park on Mulhard Drive.

“When we got there, we found a double-wide fully involved,” said Battalion Chief Jerry McAnally of the Oxnard Fire Department. “I mean, there was fire burning from every window.”

McAnally said the mobile home next door was catching fire when they arrived, so firefighters initially concentrated on saving that home. A few windows were broken and siding burned on that mobile home, which sustained about $2,000 damage.

“They did a real good job saving that one,” McAnally said. “A few more minutes and that would have [burned] too.”

No one was injured during the two-alarm blaze, McAnally said. He said the occupant of the destroyed mobile home, Marcella Percival, was doing some weather coating and left the mobile home to buy a mask because the odor of gas was so strong. While she was out, the fire started.

“We think that may have had something to do with the fire,” McAnally said.

Investigators estimated the damage at $100,000.
