Wilander Wins at New Haven

Unseeded Mats Wilander delighted his new neighbors Friday, upsetting Marc Rosset, 6-7 (10-8), 7-5, 7-5, in the quarterfinals of the Volvo International tennis tournament at New Haven, Conn.

Wilander, a native of Sweden who resides in Greenwich, Conn., overcame sixth-seeded Rosset in a late afternoon match that featured numerous extended rallies. He advanced to a semifinal match against top-seeded Andre Agassi, who defeated seventh-seeded Sergi Bruguera, 6-4, 6-1.

In another quarterfinal match, Richard Krajicek defeated defending champion Boris Becker, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), to advance to a semifinal match against Yevgeny Kafelnikov.

Top-seeded Pete Sampras reached the 400-victory mark on the Assn. of Tennis Professionals Tour, defeating Andrei Medvedev, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinals of the RCA Championships at Indianapolis. Sampras will face Bernd Karbacher in one semifinal, and Thomas Enqvist will play Goran Ivanisevic, who defeated Alberto Berasategui, 6-4, 6-4.

Gymnastics

Dominique Moceanu had the crowd--and the senior women’s all-around title--in her pocket by the time she finished her floor exercise at the National Gymnastics Championships at New Orleans. Moceanu, at 13 the youngest woman to win the title, was appearing in her first senior event. She scored 78.450 points. Moceanu’s championship was all but assured when Shannon Miller, the leader after the compulsories, fell from the balance beam during the first rotation of the optionals.

Track and Field

Okkert Brits, a 22-year-old South African, cleared 19 feet 9 1/4 inches at the Weltklasse meet in Cologne, Germany, becoming only the second pole vaulter after Sergei Bubka to go higher than 19-8 1/4.

The women’s pole vault world record fell when Daniela Bartova of the Czech Republic regained the mark by clearing 13-9 1/4. She and Germany’s Andrea Mueller have been trading the record. Mueller held it at 13-8 1/2 for two weeks.

In other events, Allen Johnson ran the fastest 110-meter hurdles this year, 12.98 seconds, and Gwen Torrence won the 200 in 21.77, also the fastest time of the year.

Azusa Pacific will forfeit its last five Golden State Athletic Conference championships because it inadvertently exceeded conference scholarship limits, but the school’s 11 NAIA championships will not be affected.

Linford Christie, Olympic 100-meter champion, might face problems with British team officials after he cited medical reasons for withdrawing from the meet against the United States at Gateshead, England, on Monday. He had injured his hamstring two weeks ago at the World Championships while losing his title to Donovan Bailey, but clocked his best time of the season, 10.04 seconds, in beating Bailey in Zurich, Switzerland, on Wednesday.

Steve Scott, who holds the American record in the mile, and Sylvia Mosqueda, a former NCAA champion in the 10,000 meters for Cal State L.A., are the favorites in the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively, of the PruCare 5,000-meter road race, which begins at 10 a.m. today in Westwood.

Hockey

Neal Broten, arrested and charged with drunk driving Wednesday morning in River Falls, Wis., re-signed with the Stanley Cup champion New Jersey Devils. . . . Stu Grimson, a restricted free-agent forward who finished last season with the Detroit Red Wings, signed an offer sheet with the New York Rangers. . . . The Chicago Blackhawks signed forward Denis Savard, their leading scorer in the Stanley Cup playoffs, and five other veteran players to contracts.

Jurisprudence

Tricia Miller, 31, of Port Hope, Canada, charged with threatening the life of Toronto second baseman Roberto Alomar, was released on $15,000 bail. Miller was arrested July 2 after allegedly telling the staff at SkyDome hotel she wanted to kill Alomar. The Blue Jays were playing in the stadium that day. Police said Miller had a loaded .22-caliber revolver in her handbag.

Miscellany

Brown University President Vartan Gregorian said the school will defy District Court Judge Raymond Pettine’s order that it create four new women’s varsity sports to remedy a sexual discrimination case, saying that the order would be appealed and that Pettine was meddling in school affairs.

Bobby Labonte, looking for his second consecutive victory at Michigan International Speedway, will be on the pole for Sunday’s running of the GM Goodwrench 400 after turning a qualifying lap of 184.403 m.p.h. on the two-mile, high-banked track in a Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

Undefeated Steve Johnston (16-0, 11 KOs) retained his NABF lightweight title, stopping Paquipo Openio (19-10-4) in the seventh round of their scheduled 12-round bout in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Veteran Mexican soccer star Hugo Sanchez says he will play Major League Soccer in the United States next season. . . . Howard Shannon, who led Virginia Tech to its first NIT and NCAA basketball tournament appearances, died of lung cancer in Plano, Tex. He was 73.

Cleveland State forward Jamal Jackson was fatally stabbed in Boston, hours before he was due back on campus. No arrest has been made.
