San Gabriel Valley : West Covina OKs 5 Horses Per Acre
Seeking to put the West back in West Covina, the City Council is about to allow more horses in the city once known as the horse capital of the San Gabriel Valley.
The council is in the process of approving a law that could increase the number of horses on land already zoned for them.
“Our old ordinance was far too restrictive on horses,” said Mayor Steve Herfert, a horseman who is partial to a 10-gallon hat. “ ‘We’re putting the West back in West Covina’ is our city slogan this year.”
The law, which received initial council approval last week and is likely to get the final nod Sept. 5, mostly affects residents in the eastern, rustic part of the city who advocated the change.
Under the law, five horses--instead of three--would be allowed on an acre of land zoned for the animals, city officials said.
