A car heading northbound down the Conejo Grade struck and killed a 37-year-old Camarillo man about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday as the victim tried to adjust the load in his pickup truck, which was stopped on the shoulder of the road, a CHP spokesman said.

The victim, whose name was withheld pending the notification of his relatives, was pronounced dead at the scene by an off-duty Los Angeles firefighter on his way home from work.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the man was identified as 44-year-old William Martin Deshields. The accident is still under investigation, said Officer Miles Ingraham of the California Highway Patrol.

“We really don’t know if the victim was in the roadway or not,” Ingraham said. “There weren’t a lot of eyewitnesses at the scene. We’re hoping someone will contact us as we investigate further.”

The accident tied up rush-hour traffic heading north and closed the third lane of the Ventura Freeway, while CHP officers investigated.
