Nebraska apparently didn’t have much trouble replacing the 14 starters gone from last year’s national championship team.

The No. 2 Cornhuskers dominated Oklahoma State Thursday night, piling up 671 yards on the way to a 64-21 victory at Stillwater, Okla. Lawrence Phillips and Tommie Frazier led the way, Phillips scoring three first-half touchdowns and Frazier throwing for two scores and running for one.

Nebraska had 513 yards on the ground, 153 by Phillips. The Cornhusker defense allowed 282 yards, but most came in the second half when the starters were on the sideline.

“Our running game was on tonight,” Frazier said. “If it’s on like that, I don’t think too many teams can stop us.”

It was an ugly debut for Oklahoma State Coach Bob Simmons. His team had one yard of offense in the first quarter, only 95 at halftime, and five times during the game was held to five yards or less on possessions.

Nebraska, 13-0 last year, won its 26th consecutive regular-season game--the longest streak in the country--and beat Oklahoma State for the 22nd consecutive time. Oklahoma State, 3-7-1 in 1994, lost its 19th conference game in a row dating to 1992.

Phillips had 125 yards at halftime. He wound up with only 12 carries and took a seat early in the third quarter, after the Cornhuskers scored on their first possession of the second half to take a 43-7 lead.

North Carolina State 33, Marshall 16--The Wolfpack escaped its third scare in five years against Marshall, rallying behind quarterback Terry Harvey in the second half for a victory at Raleigh, N.C.

Marshall, an NCAA Division I-AA team and defending Southern Conference champion, led 7-0 and 10-7 in the first half. Harvey, who completed 15 of 24 passes for 181 yards, put the N.C. State ahead with a 19-yard scoring pass to Mike Guffie 17 seconds before halftime.

Appalachian State 24, Wake Forest 22--Scott Satterfield scored two touchdowns and the Mountaineers’ defense held off a second-half rally by the Demon Deacons at Winston Salem, N.C.

The Demon Deacons had won 12 of the previous 17 games against the I-AA Mountaineers, including three in a row and four of the last five.

Satterfield rushed for 98 yards in 19 carries. He was nearly scratched from the game because of a deep cut on his right throwing hand that required 30 stitches.

Southern Mississippi 45, Northern Illinois 13--Heath Graham threw two touchdowns passes and Fred Brock scored twice and forced a safety in a five-minute span to lead the Golden Eagles at Hattiesburg, Miss.

Southern Mississippi won four of its last five games in 1994, averaging 37 points and 454 yards a game with Graham as the starter. The Golden Eagles had 462 yards against Northern Illinois.

The Golden Eagles scored on five of their six first-half possessions to build a 32-7 lead.

Iowa State 36, Ohio 21--Sophomore Troy Davis rushed for a school-record 291 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Cyclones at Ames, Iowa.

Iowa State won for the first time since Nov. 6, 1993, extending Ohio’s losing streak to 12--the longest in NCAA Division I-A.

The Cyclones ended their drought in a game matching the only two I-A teams that didn’t win a game last season, giving Coach Dan McCarney a victory in his debut and spoiling the coaching debut of Ohio’s Jim Grobe.
