Highlights

Mater Dei rolled through the season, then won the Southern Section Division I title. The Monarchs won two exceptional games. They beat Los Alamitos, 28-24, in the semifinals in front of 30,065 at Anaheim Stadium. It snapped Los Alamitos’ 47-game unbeaten streak. A week later, they defeated top-seeded La Puente Bishop Amat, 28-21, in front of 26,294 at Anaheim Stadium. Trabuco Hills reached the semifinals, losing to Bishop Amat, 49-22. Mission Viejo lost to Bishop Amat, 42-11, in the first round. Mater Dei quarterback John Flynn was named the league’s most valuable player. Monarch running back Steve Bodnar was the offensive player of the year. Trabuco Hills linebacker Jeremy Taylor was the defensive player of the year.
