An alert neighbor helped Ventura police officers nab a suspected burglar Tuesday morning who broke into an apartment on North Laurel Street.

Mark Anthony Hernandez, 30, was arrested on suspicion of burglary after a neighbor called police to report she saw a man prop a two-by-four against a nearby balcony about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday and shimmy up the board to gain access to the apartment, a Ventura police spokeswoman said.

Officers arrived soon after receiving the call from the neighbor and trapped Hernandez alone in the apartment, the spokeswoman said. The apartment’s resident was at work at the time of the break-in.

Police said they persuaded Hernandez to surrender, and arrested him on suspicion of burglary and for outstanding warrants. He was booked into the Ventura County Jail, where his bail is set at $25,000.
