Share

Police investigators are searching for a pickup truck driver who struck and killed a 54-year-old man on a bicycle and then sped away, authorities said Thursday.

A white truck heading east in the 3200 block of West 17th Street about 10 p.m. Wednesday struck Dung Van Nguyen, of Garden Grove, who was riding in the same direction, Police Lt. Robert Chavez said.

Nguyen was thrown from his bicycle and landed next to the curb, where he died, police said.

Two witnesses, one using a public telephone across the street and another who was standing nearby, described the pickup truck as a 1980s model with two large rolls of carpet in its bed and packing blankets tied to the roof, Police Investigator Manuel Martinez said.

The right front side of the truck may be damaged, he said.

“There was no indication that the truck was speeding prior to the accident,” Martinez said. “Both the truck and the bicyclist seemed to have been legally going down the road. As to whether the truck may have swerved or the bicycle may have swerved off their paths, we don’t know.”

Witnesses said the truck driver did not try to stop, Martinez said.

The investigation is continuing and police are asking anyone with information about the driver to call (714) 647-5084.
