A two-car collision on Pacific Coast Highway left three Newport Beach residents seriously injured and caused major traffic congestion Friday evening, police said.

Howard Trepp, 60, was driving east on the highway about 5:15 p.m. when his Acura collided with a BMW driven by Paul Long, 49, who with his wife, Donna, was heading north on Avocado Avenue, Police Sgt. John Freeman said. Trepp’s car then careened into a steel pole on the side of the street.

The Longs were trapped in their car and were freed with the Jaws of Life device.

They were airlifted to UC Irvine Medical Center, where they were listed in critical condition, Freeman said. Trepp was treated at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana for a broken leg and fractured ribs.
