Tiki Barber rushed for 130 yards and scored on a short run with 13 seconds left as No. 16-ranked Virginia rallied to defeat No. 23 North Carolina State, 29-24, Saturday in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Raleigh, N.C.

The Cavaliers, 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the ACC, dominated most of the first three quarters, but trailed, 24-23, after N.C. State (1-1, 0-1) scored 17 fourth-quarter points on drives of 96 and 84 yards and Scott Primanti’s 31-yard field goal with 1:19 left.

Mike Groh threw two incomplete passes to start the final drive, but then completed five consecutive passes--four to Patrick Jeffers--before Barber raced 17 yards to the one. After a timeout, Barber, who carried 24 times, plunged into the end zone with the winning score.

The lead changed hands four times in the final 8:46.

“I’m back to earth now, but it’s been a long time since I’ve jumped up and down on the sideline like that,” said Virginia Coach George Welsh.

Maryland 32, North Carolina 18--The Terrapins, losers of five in a row to the Tar Heels by an average of 19.2 points, scored 25 points in the second half to upset North Carolina in an ACC game at College Park, Md.

Mancel Johnson caught touchdown passes on plays covering 50 and 32 yards for Maryland (2-0, 1-0) in one of its biggest victories under Coach Mark Duffner, who is now 11-24 since taking over in 1992.

North Carolina, ranked No. 20 in the preseason, fell to 0-2 for the first time since 1988. The Tar Heels had five turnovers, and last week in a 20-9 loss to Syracuse, they had four.

North Carolina quarterback Mike Thomas, who threw two interceptions last week, had four against the Terrapins.

Duke 24, Rutgers 14--Spence Fischer connected with Joe Opalenick on a 13-yard scoring pass with 4:08 remaining at Durham, N.C., to break a tie for Duke and then Tom Cochran added a 33-yard field goal with 1:12 to play.

Opalenick’s touchdown was the first of his career, and his celebration in the corner of the end zone drew a penalty flag, forcing the Blue Devils (1-1) to kick off from their own 20.

However, Duke stopped the Scarlet Knights when Desi Thomas intercepted Ray Lucas’ pass intended for Marco Battaglia at the Rutgers’ 34 with 3:02 left.

Tulane 35, Wake Forest 9--Linebacker Monte Burke set up a touchdown with a fumble recovery and returned another for a score as the independent Green Wave beat the ACC Demon Deacons at New Orleans.

Jamaican Dartez, a 5-foot-7, 180-pound freshman, ran for 103 yards and scored two touchdowns, on a 19-yard run in the third quarter and a two-yard run in the fourth.

Tulane (1-1) held Wake Forest (0-2) to 267 yards, 51 rushing, while winning at home for the first time since 1993, a span of nine games.
