Florida State tailback Warrick Dunn doesn’t see himself as anything special. His teammates say Dunn’s success comes because opponents often don’t see him.

Dunn, with only 12 carries, ran for 180 yards and two touchdowns, with the second coming on a 55-yard run in the fourth quarter, as No. 1 Florida State outlasted Clemson, 45-26, on Saturday.

“They have to get so low to tackle him, you can’t always see him coming. Then you think you’ve got him wrapped up, but he just bursts through,” said Florida State reserve Rock Preston, who rushed for 54 yards on 12 carries as the Seminoles, 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, won their 26th game in a row since joining the league in 1992.

Without Dunn, Florida State might have been in trouble. Clemson (1-1, 0-1) out-rushed and continually outsmarted Florida State, which only rarely cranked up the offensive machine Duke Coach Fred Goldsmith complained about last week in a 70-26 loss.

But Dunn, who also set up two scores with runs of 35 and 41 yards, wore through Clemson.

“Their offensive line is so big, you can’t see over them to get to him,” Tiger safety Brian Dawkins said. “You look up and then he’s down the field.”

Florida State gave up 321 yards rushing to its 285, 22 first downs and was called for 100 yards in penalties. Still, the Seminoles tied the mark North Carolina State set for most points at Clemson.

Dunn said it’s too early to think Heisman Trophy, or even team MVP after two games.

“I’m not going out there thinking I have to do this or that to win some award,” Dunn said. “The team needed me today. Last week, it was a different story. They just needed me to hit it, and I was there.”

Fullback Pooh Bear Williams capped Florida State’s first two lightning quick drives with touchdown runs of two and six yards--Williams’ fifth and sixth scores this year.

After Clemson scored its first points against Florida State in nearly 147 minutes of action on Raymond Priester’s 21-yard run, Dunn’s 35-yard slant set up his three-yard score and gave the Seminoles a 21-7 halftime lead.

Dunn had a twisting 41-yard run that led to Danny Kanell’s 12-yard touchdown pass to E.G. Green, giving the Seminoles a 28-10 lead.

Dunn had a 18-yard swing pass and a 25-yard run on the next drive, which ended on Scott Bentley’s 28-yard field goal.

And, after Kanell threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Andre Cooper, Dunn danced through Clemson’s line on his 55-yard romp with 11:18 left.

However, Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden was concerned about his defense, which has given up 52 points and 832 yards in two games.

“We’ve got a good defense, but are you good enough to win it all?” he said. “I’m sure that’s the big question.”

Florida State resumed its attack-at-all-costs offense right after the opening kickoff, needing 1:10 before Williams’ first touchdown. Williams’ second touchdown capped another quick drive that began after Byron Capers recovered a Clemson fumble on the Florida State 30.

Jeff Sauve’s poor punt, a wobbling 27-yarder from his 14, set up Florida State’s third scoring drive, ended by a three-yard run by Dunn.
