Girl Dies, Another Hurt in Gang Shooting

A 16-year-old girl was shot to death and another teen-age girl wounded in a gang-related drive-by shooting in Boyle Heights late Saturday, police said.
The two victims and a third teen-age girl were walking south on Boyle Avenue when a dark car pulled up beside them. Someone in the car asked the girls where they were from--a signal that the shooting was gang-related, Lt. Ron Newton said.
When the girls tried to ignore the question and began walking away, a gunman in the car fired four or five shots, striking two of the girls, Newton said.
The victims were taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. One girl, 16, was pronounced dead. A second, 16 or 17, was treated for a minor gunshot injury. The third girl was not injured.
