‘TRANE RIDE: For tenor sax player Doug Webb, above, one musician stands above the rest: jazz master John Coltrane. Webb leads a quartet Friday at Chadney’s in Burbank. The Chicago native is inspired by Coltrane’s “beautiful, warm feeling.” Details in the Valley Weekend pages in Calendar (F1A).

YIDDISH--EN VOGUE: The ancient language of Eastern European Jews is making a comeback. This weekend, the Valley Cities Jewish Community Center in Sherman Oaks will hold “Yiddishkayt: A Family Festival in English & Yiddish.” The free program includes storytelling, Yiddish films, Klezmer music, food and crafts (F1B).

GAMES COPS PLAY: The Blue Line, the Los Angeles police union’s monthly newspaper, has come up with a new way to take a jab at the chief. A “Where’s Chief Willie Williams?” contest encourages readers “to sit down and write something . . . about our Chief.” One contestant submitted 10 possible locations, including such snide items as “buffet line at any Las Vegas hotel” and “standing in his bedroom archway awaiting the next earthquake.”

ADD COPS: A spokesman for Williams had no comment. “It’s not worthy of comment,” said Lt. John Dunkin. . . . Nevertheless, the contest got a boost recently thanks to the donation of a “very kind Valley businessman,” the paper said. Top prize is now $400, up from $75. Columnist Dennis Zine, who started the contest, said it gives members a way “to express their frustration and show their true feelings.” Entries so far: only a few.
