THE PREPS : FOOTBALL ROUNDUP
Hesperia Sultana 19, Brethren Christian 13--Reserve quarterback Vince Trujillo scored on a five-yard touchdown run with 12.6 seconds left to give Hesperia Sultana the nonleague victory over Brethren Christian at Lakewood Artesia High.
Trujillo’s game-winning score thwarted a second-half comeback by Brethren Christian, which never led. The Warriors (1-1), who trailed 13-0 at halftime, rallied with two second-half touchdowns after a sluggish first half.
Running back Daniel Muilenburg scored on a two-yard touchdown run with 4:21 remaining in the third quarter to cut Sultana’s lead to 13-6. Quarterback David Priestley hit tight end Kevin Cooper with a 16-yard scoring pass to tie the score, 13-13. Cooper had four catches for 64 yards.
Sultana running back T.J. Hillard rushed for 188 yards. Starting quarterback H.R. Lugo scored two first-half touchdowns for the Sultana (2-0) before he suffered a leg injury and was replaced by Trujillo.
