COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Women Fifth at Cross-Country Meet
Fifth-ranked Arkansas won the women’s championship Saturday at the Golden Coast Cross-Country Invitational at Huntington Beach Central Park.
Four Razorbacks placed among the top five in the women’s race. Megan Flowers led Arkansas, winning in a time of 17 minutes 27 seconds over 5,000 meters.
UC Irvine finished fifth in the women’s race. Jo Jo Yaba was the top finisher for the Anteaters with a time of 18:37.
In the men’s competition, Tim Martin and Theo Martin, twin brothers from Northern Arizona, finished one-two as the Lumberjacks won the men’s championship with 33 points. Both finished in 25:07 on the five-mile course.
Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine were tied with 190 points, but Fullerton finished sixth because the Titans had a higher sixth-place runner to break the tie.
At the Aztec Cross-Country Invitational:
Chapman finishes third--Chapman’s Tara McGranahan (20:18) finished seventh at the Aztec Invitational at Balboa Park. The Chapman women finished tied for third with Biola. Point Loma won the women’s with 20 points.
UC San Diego and Biola tied for first place in the men’s division with 41 points each.
At the Nike women’s soccer invitational:
UC Irvine 2, Fresno State 1--Tracie Manz scored her second game-winning goal in as many nights at the 70-minute mark to lead UC Irvine (3-0-2). The Anteaters finished tied with Brigham Young, both 2-0 in the tournament, but BYU won the tournament based on a total-goal point system.
In the Trinity women’s volleyball tournament:
Chapman 3, Wheaton (Ill.) 1--Shawna Parkinson had 19 kills for Chapman (2-2) as it defeated Wheaton, 14-16, 15-19, 15-13, 15-11.
