From Associated Press

Pat Rapp pitched a one-hitter and Gary Sheffield drove in four runs Sunday as the Florida Marlins routed Colorado, 17-0, at Denver.

Rapp (12-7), who has won seven consecutive decisions, retired the first 11 hitters before Dante Bichette’s blooper dropped between Kurt Abbott and Jesus Tavarez in left-center in the fourth.

“Bichette’s hit was up there a long time and I didn’t know if they could see it,” Rapp said. “They tried for it. If they’d caught it, I might have lost the no-hitter later.”

The Marlins set a team record for runs, tied a team record with four homers and handed the Rockies only their second shutout loss of the season at Coors Field.

Sheffield singled three times, doubled and hit a solo home run before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning.

San Diego 11, Chicago 3--Ken Caminiti became the first player in National League history to homer from both sides of the plate in consecutive games, and Fernando Valenzuela also homered at San Diego.

Batting right-handed, Caminiti homered to left field leading off the fifth. Batting left-handed leading off the seventh, he homered to center.

The 35-year-old Valenzuela (7-3) drove Kevin Foster’s first pitch of the third inning over the right-field fence, his 10th homer in 12-plus seasons in the big leagues and his second this season.

Atlanta 4, Cincinnati 1--Tom Glavine improved to 13-1 in his career at Riverfront Stadium as the Braves swept three games from the Reds.

Glavine (15-6) yielded four hits in seven innings and struck out eight.

Mike Mordecai, making his first start at third base, had a run-scoring double and homer off John Smiley (12-4) to put the Braves in control.

Pittsburgh 5, San Francisco 4--Barry Bonds ended a terrible day by flying out with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to end the game at Pittsburgh.

Bonds also struck out twice, grounded into a double play, was caught stealing and misplayed a fly ball into a triple.

San Francisco trailed, 5-3, in the ninth, but Pittsburgh closer Dan Miceli gave up a one-out single to Royce Clayton, a run-scoring pinch-double to Mark Leonard and a walk to J.R. Phillips.

Dan Plesac then relieved and gave up an infield single to Deion Sanders that loaded the bases, but John Patterson looked at a called third strike and Bonds flied out to left on a full count.

Houston 5, Montreal 3--Doug Drabek came off a suspension and pitched seven strong innings to lead the Astros at Montreal.

Drabek (10-8), who sat out five games for hitting Cincinnati’s Benito Santiago with a pitch on Sept. 5, gave up three runs on six hits and struck out five for his third consecutive victory.

New York 8, Philadelphia 2--Rico Brogna hit two home runs, including his first career grand slam, as the Mets finished a three-game sweep at New York.
