HOT WATER: Did you see that Pacific Bell commercial where the fellow found a sewer line using a divining rod? It’s off the air now. Reason: The spot described him as a Costa Mesa water worker, and the Mesa Consolidated Water District, which includes that city, took exception to the idea. Pac Bell pulled it at the district’s request. . . . Explained the district’s Mary Urashima in a terse letter to the phone company: “Water witching” is “not a service offered by the district or any of its employees.”

GETTING KNICKED: The best ticket in sports? Money magazine this month says it’s the playoff-bound Cleveland Indians, where two fans can eat, drink, park and enjoy for under $36 total. . . . The Angels ranked 30th out of 80 teams in baseball, basketball and football. That was well below the Los Angeles Dodgers, who ranked 14th. The worst buy: The New York Knicks--$110 for two.

FULL AGENDA? It was at the posh Newport Beach mansion of Irvine Co. chairman/billionaire Donald Bren that Gov. Pete Wilson decided to skip campaigning in the cornfields of Iowa and concentrate his presidential bid in New Hampshire, says the latest Time magazine. It describes the Sept. 7 session at Bren’s house as “tense,” with Wilson staffers feuding about it. . . . Question is: Was Wilson too caught up in his own campaign problems to have time to discuss with Bren a replacement for County Supervisor Gaddi H. Vasquez, scheduled to step down Sept. 27?

ANOTHER PLANET: Movie fans like William Sutton of Mission Viejo lament that Hollywood hasn’t done a better job of preserving movie memorabilia. Says Sutton, a collector himself: “For a long time, the studios had a real blase attitude about this stuff. I’ve seen beautiful gowns worn by Judy Garland or Grace Kelly that were just rags because they weren’t ever stored properly.” . . . Now there’s a new home for many of these gems--Planet Hollywood in Beverly Hills, which opened Monday (F1). It’s the latest of the 28 in the Planet chain, which includes a Santa Ana club.
