CAMARILLO : Strike Halts Work on Santa Rosa Road

Share

A strike by heavy-equipment operators has halted work indefinitely on the widening and paving of a one-mile stretch of Santa Rosa Road near Camarillo, officials said.

Art Goulet, director of the county Public Works Department, told the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday that members of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 12 abandoned work on the $1.5-million road project last week just before paving was to begin.

It is unclear how long the strike will last or when the project might be finished, Goulet said. Paving of the road had been slated for completion by October, he said.

Motorists must now detour around the project site on a busy, narrow two-lane roadway, Goulet said. “It’s really not a good situation. It puts the public in jeopardy.”

Officials of the operating engineers union did not return phone calls.
