Kim Reaches 2nd Round of U.S. Mid-Amateur Golf

Sylvia Kim of Thousand Oaks defeated Kerry Postillion of Burr Ridge, Ill., 2 and 1, Wednesday in first-round match play at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur golf tournament at the Essex Country Club in Manchester, Mass.

Patty Moore of Charlotte, N.C., eliminated Linda-Chen Olsen of Granada Hills, 4 and 2.

Football

Tommie Smith, USA Today’s California player of the year in 1988 at Antelope Valley High, is a starting outside linebacker for the San Antonio Texans of the Canadian Football League.

Smith has 37 tackles, one sack and an interception for the Texans (7-5). He is third on the team in tackles despite missing five weeks because of a knee injury. He returned to the lineup last weekend.

Basketball

Cal State Northridge is conducting a one-day coaches clinic on Sept. 30, featuring instruction by Northridge coaches Pete Cassidy and Michael Abraham, Cal Lutheran Coach Rich Rider, Valley College Coach Doug Michelson, UCLA assistant Steve Lavin and St. John Bosco High Coach Brian Breslin.

Presidents of Big Sky Conference universities will make a decision on Cal State Northridge’s membership application between Oct. 16 and 18, according to a conference spokesperson.

Bob Hiegert, longtime athletic director at Cal State Northridge who was fired in July, has applied for the vacant position of athletic director at Montana.

However Dave Guffey, Montana’s sports information director, said Hiegert is not among four finalists for the job.
