Celebrations Planned for Rosh Hashanah

Jewish congregations throughout Ventura County are planning special activities to observe Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, which begins Sunday.

K’hilat Ha’Aloneem, Jewish Community of the Oaks, will host two guest rabbis Sunday and Monday at the Jewish Community Center in Ojai. Rabbis Arthur Gross Schaefer of Santa Barbara and Judith HaLevy of Los Angeles will take part in services on Rosh Hashanah Eve Sunday and on Monday morning.

Chabad of the Conejo will hold its seventh Tashlich Walk on Monday at 4:45 p.m. The tradition of tashlich consists of visiting a body of water inhabited by fish, where a special prayer is recited and Jews cast away their sins.

The walk will begin at the Radisson Hotel in Agoura and proceed to Lake Lindero. Services will be held at the Radisson Hotel, and all Jews are welcome. Evening services will take place Sunday and Monday at 6:45 p.m., and morning services will take place Monday and Tuesday at 10 a.m. Call (818) 991-0991 for information.

Temple Etz Chaim of Thousand Oaks will host services Sunday at 8:15 p.m., and Monday and Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. Accompanying the cantor will be a 30-voice choir. For information call 497-6891.

Ventura County Jewish Council-Temple Beth Torah in Ventura will host Rosh Hashanah services Sunday at 8 p.m. On Monday, it will host a morning service at 10 a.m., a children’s service at 4 p.m., and a tashlich at 5 p.m., in which the congregation will cast its sins away by throwing bread crumbs into the ocean at Marina Park.
