It was only exhibition hockey, but somewhere in the back of their minds the New York Rangers have to remember that they still have never beaten the Mighty Ducks.

It took a power-play goal by Ray Ferraro with two seconds left in the third period for the Rangers to force overtime before settling for a 4-4 tie Sunday at The Pond of Anaheim, where the paid attendance was 16,829.

Granted, the teams have met only twice, but the Ducks swept the 1993-94 season series against the Rangers, who went on to win the Stanley Cup. The shortened 1994-95 season prevented the teams from meeting, and they won’t play their third official game until Nov. 3.

“It’s funny, on the way to the game we were trying to go over who we were going to be playing and we didn’t really have anything to say,” said Ranger goalie Mike Richter.

The Rangers sent a veteran lineup against the Ducks, but Valeri Karpov’s third and fourth goals of the exhibition season helped the Ducks to a 4-1 lead.

Ferraro, the former Islander signed by the Rangers as a free agent, scored twice. Luc Robitaille and Ulf Samuelsson, acquired in a trade with Pittsburgh, also scored.
