The center at 19401 S. Vermont Ave. will provide meeting and work space for Svorinich’s staff, the local chamber of commerce and the Harbor City/Harbor Gateway Boys and Girls Club. The center will also be available for police officers to write reports. The hope, Svorinich spokesman Barry Glickman said, is that the center will help keep more patrol officers in the neighborhood by freeing them from having to drive to Harbor station in San Pedro to write reports.

The 1,500-square-foot center has been rented by Svorinich’s office, and space is being leased to community organizations for $1 per year. Plans for the center include a phone hot line to the Department of Water and Power and a computer that will link up to the city computer system. Glickman said he plans to place a constituent services staffer at the office to help people with concerns about city services.

“We’re hoping to bring a sense of belonging to this area of the city,” Glickman said. “We’re hoping it becomes a central place for people who want to know about city activities.”
