SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

At least three people, including a baby, were killed Friday night in Lakewood when the car in which they were riding was rammed by a car fleeing Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies, authorities said.

A taxicab was also struck in the collision, and an unidentified passenger was in critical condition at a local hospital, Deputy Bill Martin said.

The man fleeing deputies, Juancho Lopez Rells, 22, was arrested at the scene and booked on suspicion of murder, Martin said. Rells, who was wanted on burglary and grand theft auto charges, fled deputies in his car about 9 p.m.

Martin said Rells sped from the Lakewood Mall and led deputies along Lakewood and Del Amo boulevards before slamming into an auto at Paramount Boulevard.

The car was so badly damaged that firefighters had to use hydraulic cutting tools to extricate the victims. No information was immediately available on the victims’ identities.

The two adults were pronounced dead at the scene, and the baby was pronounced dead a short time later at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, said Charlotte Kramer, a Los Angeles County Fire Department supervisor.

The suspect suffered a broken leg in the collision, Martin said.

A waitress in a nearby restaurant, Lynn Isaac, 24, said the car being pursued by deputies crossed to the wrong side of the street and hit a taxicab.
