A 22-year-old man was shot and killed by a police officer Friday after the man pointed a sawed-off shotgun at him, police said.

Around 8:15 p.m., uniformed officers in an unmarked police car heard gunshots fired in an alley near the Oakview area by the intersection of Beach Boulevard and Slater Avenue, Lt. Dan Johnson said.

The two officers drove south in the alley off of Jacquelyn Lane and saw Jose Manuel Rios, who lives in the 1700 block of that street, walking with the weapon in his hand. Rios turned around and pointed the shotgun at the car, Johnson said.

The officers tried to stop him by knocking him over with the car at a slow speed. When Rios pointed the weapon at the passenger side of the car, the officer opened his door and fired at him. Rios died immediately.

The shooting is under investigation.
