UCI Tops Stanford in Water Polo
Senior Matt Maunz scored three goals and sophomore Ryan Bailey two as sixth-ranked UC Irvine held off third-ranked Stanford, 7-6, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo game Friday at Stanford.
The Anteaters had a 7-2 lead late in the third quarter, but Stanford scored three goals in the last three minutes of the quarter.
Stanford cut Irvine’s lead to one with about four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Anteaters’ defense and goalkeeper Tom Davis were able shut down the Cardinal offense. Davis finished with 11 saves.
UC Irvine improved to 5-3. Stanford has a 10-2 record.
