ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREP EXTRA : Woodbridge Fumbles Away Chance to Break 7-7 Tie

Century withstood a late threat by Woodbridge Friday night and hung on to a 7-7 tie in a nonleague game at Irvine High.

Woodbridge, which scored its first points of the season in the third quarter, had a chance to win the game when it drove the ball to the Century three-yard with 27 seconds left. But on a third-down play, Kris Stevenson fumbled the ball and Century’s Richard Roa recovered.

After gaining possession, Century (1-2-1) advanced the ball to its own 48-yard line when quarterback Diaz connected with Jose Serratos on a 21-yard pass play.

But Diaz threw an incomplete pass on the next play as time ran out.

The game was marred by turnovers. Woodbridge and Century both fumbled the ball away three times.

Woodbridge (0-3-1) moved ahead, 7-0, late in the third quarter. Senior Ricky Jenkins scampered 19 yards around the left side for a touchdown with 1:08 remaining in the quarter.

But on its next possession, Century evened the score, 7-7, when Roland Cortez scampered 59 yards for a touchdown with 11:49 left in the game.

Cortez led Century with 90 yards rushing in 13 carries.

Woodbridge was led by sophomore quarterback Adam Lawyer, who completed 14 of 28 passes for 140 yards.

Jenkins had 11 catches for 96 yards. He was used as a receiver, a running back and a quarterback. Jenkins was 0-1 passing, but he rushed for 51 yards in 16 carries.

Woodbridge had a chance to go ahead late in the first half when it moved the ball to the Century five-yard line, but the drive stalled there and Mark Kerns’ 23-yard field goal attempt went wide right as time expired.
