Texas had plenty of firepower to make up for an off day by quarterback James Brown, as Shon Mitchell rushed for 180 yards and two touchdowns for the No. 21 Longhorns, who rolled to a 35-10 victory over Southern Methodist on Saturday in a Southwest Conference opener at Dallas.

Texas (3-1) bounced back from a 55-27 loss to Notre Dame to win the 73rd and last scheduled game in a series dating back to 1916. With the breakup of the SWC, Texas heads for the new Big 12 and SMU (1-4) to the Western Athletic Conference.

The sore-shouldered Brown had a bizarre day. He threw two touchdown passes but had three passes intercepted by SMU cornerback Cornell Parker. He was replaced in the second half by Richard Walton, who threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Matt Davis.
