Central : SANTA ANA : New Site Studied for Northeast Substation

The City Council will consider moving one of its five police substations to a location with better visibility.

Instead of extending the lease for the Northeast Substation for an additional three years, the council Monday night requested a report on alternative locations. The council should receive the report within 30 days.

“It’s not a very visible substation,” said Councilwoman Lisa Mills, who suggested that new locations be considered.

Mills’ alternatives included the French Court area, just north of the downtown and south of the Santa Ana Freeway. Such a move would take the substation from a strip mall to a more residential setting.

The Northeast Substation has been in the 1200 block of East 17th Street, about a mile from French Court on the other side of the freeway, for five years, according to a staff report. The city leases the 2,700-square-foot location for $3,705 a month.

The council unanimously agreed to consider an alternative location.
