PREP FOOTBALL / SEA VIEW LEAGUE : Corona del Mar Easily Defeats Woodbridge

Surely somewhere, likely in some remote outpost, there is a high school football team than does less on offense than Woodbridge. That’s the comforting part.

Here’s the pain: The Warriors aren’t scheduled to play in any remote outposts. Thus, they better get used to losing regularly by eye-opening scores. Then again, they might be already.

Corona del Mar was the latest team to rest its starters early against Woodbridge, cruising to a 42-0 victory in a Sea View League opener in front of approximately 3,700 at Newport Harbor High.

The Sea Kings (5-1, 1-0 in league play) had all the points they needed with 8 minutes 50 seconds left in the first quarter, thanks to Tom O’Meara’s four-yard touchdown run. The first of kicker Jim Keane’s six point-after attempts (which tied a school record) gave Corona del Mar a 7-0 lead, meaning Woodbridge could have gone home right then.

The Warriors (0-5-1, 0-1) seldom reach end zones--once so far this season. Only a 7-7 tie with Century blemishes Woodbridge’s dubious distinction on offense: six games, five shutouts.

Quarterbacks Adam Lawyer and Brian Millat split time and were equally ineffective. Millat completed six of 14 passes for 37 yards and two interceptions. Lawyer completed six of 16 for 35 yards.

Corona del Mar quarterback Josh Walz took apart the Warriors’ defense with his right arm and legs before the Sea Kings’ coaches pulled him and the other starters midway through the third quarter. Walz completed 10 of 13 passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed eight times for 84 yards and one touchdown--a nifty 44-yard scramble after a broken play.

It came with 8:01 remaining in the third quarter and helped give Corona del Mar a 35-0 lead when Keane kicked his fifth point-after. If Woodbridge had any hope left, that about crushed it.

“I thought the offense played pretty well, and we got all the breaks,” Walz said. “I’m really glad all the guys got to play.”

O’Meara also played a strong game for the Sea Kings. O’Meara gained 60 yards in 10 carries and scored three touchdowns.

His two short first-half touchdowns, on runs of one and four yards, helped Corona del Mar take a 28-0 halftime lead.

“It’s kind of tough to really get a feel for everything when you basically play only one half,” Walz said. “But I think we ran everything the way we needed to.”
