Update / Follow-up on the news : HUNTINGTON BEACH : Renovation to Start for City Gym, Pool
The first phase of a $2-million project to renovate the historic City Gym and Pool will begin later this month.
The initial upgrades, expected to cost about $575,000, include work on the exterior and interior of the building to make it accessible to disabled people.
The City Council recently approved spending the money for the project, funded through federal and state grants.
Ramps will be installed and restroom stalls and doorways will be widened to accommodate wheelchairs, said Deputy Community Services Director Jim Engle.
Plans call for a fire sprinkler system, roof repairs and remodeling of some rooms.
Engle said work is expected to be completed in about six months. The facility, built in 1931, will remain open during construction.
