NHL ROUNDUP : Renberg Signs, Leads Flyers, 7-1

Mikael Renberg agreed to a new four-year contract worth $6.4 million Sunday, then went out and started earning his money.

Renberg scored twice and linemates Eric Lindros and John LeClair each added their third goal of the season as the Philadelphia Flyers got their fourth victory in as many games, 7-1, over the winless Edmonton Oilers.

Renberg, who has 70 goals in 136 regular-season games since joining the Flyers in 1993-94, might have been able to get more money if he tested the free-agent waters next year, but he said that wasn’t important.

“I’m so happy to be here in Philly,” said Renberg, who has four goals in four games. “I didn’t want to wait another year to sign. The money I get now is enough for the rest of my life.”

The Flyers broke open a 2-1 game by scoring five goals in the third period, two on the power play and one shorthanded.

The “Legion of Doom” line of Lindros, LeClair and Renberg combined for four goals and five assists.

The Oilers got a first-period goal from Igor Kravchuk but were unable to get a second shot past Flyer goalie Ron Hextall, who made 17 saves.

New Jersey 4, Buffalo 3--The defending Stanley Cup champion Devils didn’t come unglued when they blew a two-goal lead, rallying for the victory at Buffalo (1-3) on Valeri Zelepukin’s power-play goal with 1.8 seconds left in the second period.

The Sabres, a young team with a blue-collar image, played a scrappy game but were shut down in the third period by New Jersey’s defense. The Devils allowed the Sabres only four shots in the last 20 minutes.

The Devils (4-0) remained undefeated, while Buffalo (1-3) dropped its third in a row after a season-opening win at Ottawa.

Chicago 1, Calgary 1--The Blackhawks’ Jeff Hackett and the Flames’ Trevor Kidd made 24 saves apiece in the tie at Chicago.

Cory Stillman scored in the first period for Calgary (0-2-2) and Patrick Poulin scored for Chicago (2-2-1) in the second.

Ottawa 7, Tampa Bay 4--Defenseman Sean Hill scored from 90 feet to break a third-period tie and spark the Senators past the Lightning at St. Petersburg, Fla.

Left wing Dan Quinn had the second five-point night in Ottawa’s history, scoring twice and assisting on three goals as the Senators (1-2-0) won for the first time this season. Tampa is 1-2-1.

Florida 5, N.Y. Islanders 3--Rob Niedermayer, Florida’s first pick in the 1993 entry draft, scored two goals, including the game-winner, to give the Panthers the victory over the Islanders at Miami.

The victory was a record fourth in a row at home for Florida (5-1) and matched a franchise high. It also kept the Islanders winless (0-3-1) after four games.

Winnipeg 5, Detroit 5--The Jets (3-2) blew a two-goal lead and had to come from behind in the third to tie the Red Wings (3-1-1) at Winnipeg.
