Smuggler of Illegal Immigrants Sentenced to Prison Term

A 23-year-old Chinese national sobbed Monday as a federal judge sentenced her to 14 months in prison for bringing illegal immigrants from her homeland into the United States.

Gui Fong Wu was sentenced after she pleaded guilty in July to two counts of conspiring to smuggle and harbor the undocumented immigrants.

Assistant U.S. Atty. David Lavine also alleged that Wu forced at least two illegal immigrants into a Monterey Park prostitution ring to pay the cost of their passage. But U.S. District Judge Dickran Tevrizian ruled that the government did not provide sufficient proof of those allegations.

Wu admitted to delivering food, clothing and medicine to 45 illegal immigrants who were kept in San Gabriel Valley “drophouses.”

Wu’s sister, Hau Wu, was sentenced on Oct. 10 to 15 months in prison on two similar counts.
