Shipping Line to Abandon San Francisco Bay: American President Lines is dropping Oakland as a port of call after nearly 150 years, bypassing San Francisco Bay for Seattle and Los Angeles. APL, which has operated at the Port of Oakland since 1848 and is the port’s largest cargo line, will stop using Oakland as a port of call in January. The shipping line said the decision was made in partnership with Orient Overseas Container Line, Mitsui-OSK and Nedlloyd Line. The companies will pool resources and routes, meaning cargo could be loaded on ships from any of the four companies. American President Lines would use any of the four’s cargo containers, anywhere in the world. APL said it will keep its headquarters in Oakland.
