PALO COMADO CANYON : Controlled Burn Is Planned for 750 Acres

Share

A controlled burn is scheduled at 8 a.m. today in Palo Comado Canyon near Chesebro Road in Agoura Hills.

The Ventura County Fire Protection District and National Park Service plan to burn 750 acres if the weather conditions and air quality are sufficient to conduct the burn.

The controlled burn is designed to reduce the density of brush, grass and other fuels to limit the intense fire potential of fuels left unburned, to conduct wildland firefighting training and to preserve natural processes. Annual grasses require fires every three to five years to preserve the area, and the Palo Comado Canyon area has not burned in more than 10 years.

The Fire Protection District and Park Service are working with the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District to manage smoke in the burn area. Some smoke may drift into nearby canyon areas in Agoura Hills, Hidden Hills, and Bell, Las Virgenes and Liberty canyons.

The controlled burn was canceled twice before because of unfavorable weather conditions.
