ROUNDUP : St. Francis Throws In Towel Early

Alemany High was leading St. Francis, 14-4, in a Mission League water polo match Wednesday at Alemany when the Golden Knights forfeited with 20 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

St. Francis Coach Ernie Lee, who was ejected in the first quarter, informed the Indians (10-9, 4-3 in league play) his team was quitting after he become upset with the officiating while watching from outside the pool.

“I just get upset when we get officials who don’t know the game and haven’t played the game,” Lee said. “I did this for the safety of my players.”

Cole Wieland scored eight goals for Alemany.

Harvard-Westlake 35, Notre Dame 0--Goalies Vahe Aharonian and Brian Peterson made 13 saves for the Wolverines (16-4, 8-0) in a Mission League match.

Aharonian, playing the first and third quarters, had seven saves. Peterson had six playing the second and fourth.

Brian Schumer had nine goals and Michael Crosby added seven for Harvard.

Newbury Park 14, Agoura 12--Paul Prins scored five goals as the Panthers (14-6, 4-2) strengthened their hold on second place in the Marmonte League.

Tim Rhodes and Matt McGurk each added three goals for Newbury Park.

Loyola 18, Crespi 7--Chris Helin and Nick Conti each scored three goals for the Celts (9-16, 3-4), but it wasn’t enough. Goalie Peter Driscoll had 13 saves in the losing effort.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Chatsworth d. Cleveland, 15-4, 15-2, 15-7--Jennifer Joseph had 19 kills and Pamela George had 32 assists as the Chancellors (20-1, 8-0) won their 19th consecutive match by defeating the Cavaliers (4-6, 3-5) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Chatsworth.

Thacher d. Cornerstone Christian, 15-9, 12-15, 15-2, 15-11--Karen Breshears had 16 kills and five blocks as the visiting Eagles (12-3, 4-3) fell to the Toads in a Condor League match.

COLLEGE WATER POLO

Citrus 10, Ventura 5--Janko Gogolja’s three goals were not enough as the Pirates (19-6-1, 4-2) lost a Western State Conference match to the Fighting Owls (25-2-1, 6-0) at Citrus.

Ventura entered the match ranked second in the state, while Citrus was ranked fourth.

Valley 12, Chaffey 9--Armond Abramian scored two of his four goals in the fourth period to help the Monarchs (14-8, 3-2) hold off the Panthers in a WSC match.

Theo Smits-Van-Oye added four goals for Valley and Serjik Amiaryan had 23 saves.

Shannon Kay scored all six of his goals for Chaffey in the first half.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Westlake 10, Harvard-Westlake 8--Erin Smith, Helena Horak and Katy Smith swept their singles matches for the Warriors in a nonleague match at Harvard-Westlake (12-3).

Nicole Jensky and Marin Barrow provided the margin of victory for Westlake (14-2), defeating the Wolverines’ top doubles team of Shiela Vasen and Vicky Koven, 6-2.

Camarillo 13, Beverly Hills 5--Katy Messmer swept three sets at No. 1 singles as the Scorpions (7-7) scored a nonleague upset of the Normans at Camarillo.

The Scorpions overcame two defaults by No. 3 singles player Johanna Lalama, who withdrew due to injury, by dropping just one of nine doubles sets against Beverly Hills, ranked sixth in Southern Section Division II.

Nordhoff 18, Laguna Blanca 0--The No. 1 doubles team of Sarah Blaine and Haley Wilbur didn’t lose a game in three matches for the Rangers (9-7).

Calabasas 11, San Marino 7--Kirsten Gross swept at No. 1 singles for the Coyotes (14-2) in a nonleague defeat of the Titans (7-5) at San Marino.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

UCLA 3, CS Northridge 0--Shannon Thomas and Traci Arkenberg scored in the first half and Amy Nolin scored in the second as the Bruins (12-2-2) defeated the Matadors in a nonconference match at Northridge.

Dawn Lenard stopped two shots for the Matadors (6-9-2).
