Notes on a Scorecard - Oct. 31, 1995

The Carolina Panthers’ three-game winning streak has changed my mind about the eventual return of the NFL to Los Angeles. . . .

We should try to land an expansion franchise that we can call our own instead of an established team that might not be much better at the start. . . .

Make Don Klosterman the general manager and Bill Walsh the coach, call them the football Dodgers, and open the 1998 season in brand new Walter O’Malley Stadium. . . .

When the San Francisco 49ers, with Elvis Grbac at quarterback, routed the Rams in St. Louis, everybody said it was the system. . . .

But what was it Sunday when the 49ers, again with Grbac at quarterback, were embarrassed by the New Orleans Saints in San Francisco? . . .

Jeff Fisher is quietly doing a nice coaching job for the talent-poor Houston Oilers, who have two or three more victories than many thought they would have at this stage of the season. . . .

Everyone used to play both offense and defense in the NFL, so why can’t Deion Sanders? . . .

Make room for Green Bay Packer tight end Keith Jackson on the all-overrated team. . . .

Having the Arizona Cardinal-Seattle Seahawk game linger into overtime was cruel and unusual punishment for the 39,600 fans at Sun Devil Stadium. The teams committed 11 turnovers and were penalized 22 times. . . .

I guess Nebraska moved ahead of Florida State in the polls because the Seminoles scored 56 fewer points than usual Saturday. . . .

There is a remarkable similarity between Ohio State’s high-powered offense and that of Penn State last season. . . .

The Nittany Lions had Kerry Collins at quarterback, Ki-Jana Carter at tailback, Bobby Engram at wide receiver, and Kyle Brady at tight end. . . .

The Buckeyes have Bobby Hoying at quarterback, Eddie George at tailback, Terry Glenn at wide receiver and Rickey Dudley at tight end. . . .

Dudley hasn’t received the acclaim that the others have, but is a possible first-round draft pick. . . .

The Lakers will sponsor a stay-in-school celebration Wednesday at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza at 4 p.m. Expected to participate are Cedric Ceballos, Anthony Peeler and Michael Cooper. . . .

Vin Scully will be presented the Pride of Lions award Nov. 11 at Loyola Marymount’s third annual dinner and auction at the Red Lion Hotel in Culver City. Proceeds will go to the university athletic department. . . .

You have a better memory than I do if you can remember that Cleveland Indian reliever Jim Poole pitched briefly for the Dodgers in 1990. . . .

News item: Albert Belle apologizes to NBC’s Hannah Storm for making crude remarks to her. Reaction: OK, but what about all the others who got the same treatment from the Indian outfielder? . . .

George Steinbrenner’s failure to rehire Buck Showalter as New York Yankee manager makes the top-10 list of Steinbrenner’s mistakes. . . .

The signing of Davey Johnson is Baltimore’s gain and Cincinnati’s loss. . . .

Jockey Jerry Bailey earned $156,000 for his slightly less than two-minute ride aboard Cigar in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. That computes to more than $4.6 million an hour. . . .

Cigar’s next race probably will be the Donn Handicap at Gulfstream in February. Last year, Cigar won the Donn after Holy Bull pulled up. . . .

Trainer Bill Mott also is talking about the possibility of Cigar’s running in the $1-million Pacific Classic at Del Mar next summer. . . .

As usual, NBC’s camera coverage of the seven Breeders’ Cup races was atrocious. The director was so eager to show artsy shots from various angles that it was difficult to tell how the races were unfolding. . . .

Officials’ assignments have been made for fight night Saturday in Las Vegas. . . .

Referee Mills Lane and judges Art Lurie, Duane Ford and Dave Moretti will work the Mike Tyson-Buster Mathis Jr. bout at the MGM Grand. Referee Joe Cortez and judges Joe Roth, Bill Graham and Chuck Chiampa will have more to do down the block at the Riddick Bowe-Evander Holyfield match at Caesars Palace. . . .

Thumbs up to Mighty Duck General Manager Jack Ferreira for deciding to give Coach Ron Wilson and assistants Al Sims and Tim Army one-year extensions, despite the team’s disappointing start. . . .

The Ice Dogs will never be quite the same without Hubie McDonough.
