Crescenta Valley Forfeits Three Football Victories

Share

Crescenta Valley High has forfeited three nonleague football victories because it used an ineligible player.

Senior tackle Oshin Honarchian, who transferred from Hoover last summer, was ineligible for the season’s first four games because his official residency remained within the Hoover attendance area, Southern Section officials said Wednesday.

Honarchian, who sat out one game, regained eligibility when his mother moved to within the Crescenta Valley attendance area.

Crescenta Valley drops to 2-5-1 but remains 1-1-1 in Pacific League play.

School officials discovered three weeks ago that Honarchian might be ineligible and reported the matter to the Southern Section office. Section Commissioner Dean Crowley ruled this week that Honarchian had been ineligible.

“I was hoping they would consider that this was the same student living in the same apartment, going to the same school, playing on the same team,” Bob Canfield, Crescenta Valley’s athletic director, said. “Nothing has changed, as far as this young man is concerned.”

Honarchian, a two-way tackle, moved to his father’s home during the summer and enrolled at Crescenta Valley. Last month, his mother joined the player and his father at the residence.

Chatsworth, which won last season’s City Section 4-A girls’ title, and Sylmar, which won the 3-A title, are top-seeded in their divisions in the playoffs.

The first round is Monday, with higher-seeded teams hosting matches.

Chatsworth (22-1) plays 16th-seeded South Gate, while Sylmar (12-0) plays Jefferson.

“We’ve worked hard, but, of course, being defending champions and now the No. 1 seed can have mixed blessings,” Chatsworth Coach Bud Dow said. “Now everybody’s out to get you.”

In other 4-A first-round action: No. 8 Kennedy plays No. 9 University, No. 10 El Camino Real faces No. 7 San Pedro and No. 14 Cleveland meets No. 3 Westchester.

Three of the top four seeded teams in the 3-A bracket are from the area, but Sylmar received top seeding without controversy.

“We expected it,” Spartan Coach Bob Thomson said. “I think we deserved it because we’re 12-0.”

In other 3-A first-round action: No. 2 Van Nuys plays No. 15 Fremont, No. 4 Poly meets No. 13 Hamilton and No. 11 Monroe plays at No. 6 Fairfax.

The Northridge Junior Volleyball Club is holding tryouts on Saturday at Glendale College for girls ages 14 to 16 and its 18-year-old division.

Calabasas High senior Shera Wiegler has made a verbal commitment to Iowa and becomes the third local player in the last year to choose the Big Ten Conference.

“I just feel so good about the coaches and the team at Iowa, that’s how I made my decision,” Wiegler said. “It’s a really cool conference. In Iowa, there’s no pro teams, so they go crazy for the college teams and there’s a lot of support from the area.”

Wiegler will join former Harvard-Westlake player Romy Mehlman (Illinois) and former Taft and Calabasas player Jason Weiss (Wisconsin), both of whom are freshmen.

Tish Johnson of Northridge knocked down 9,690 pins and led after five of the six rounds to gain the No. 1 qualifying position for the championship round of the $75,000 Lady Ebonite Classic in Canton, Mich.

Johnson is assured of surpassing $100,000 in earnings for the season. She has made $97,580 and the least she can win is $6,700 as the tournament’s runner-up. It is the first time in her 15-year career that she has reached six figures.

The winner of tonight’s stepladder finals earns $12,000.

Robin Romeo of Newhall finished 12th with a 14-10 record in match play and 8,934 pins to earn $1,800.
