BREA — Alan Manning’s 37-yard field goal with eight seconds left in the game carried Valencia to a 13-10 victory over Brea Olinda Friday night and kept the Tigers in the playoff race.
Valencia, which has reached the playoffs in each of its 14 years under Coach Mike Marrujo, appeared to be headed for a fourth-place Orange League finish and a 10-10 tie when it was faced with a fourth-and-12 situation with 43 seconds left. The Tigers had the ball on their 33 yard line when Eric Young connected with Manning for a 31-yard pass play and a first down.
Valencia (3-6, 2-2) drove to the 18 setting up Manning’s game-winning kick.
Brea, held to 148 yards for the first 42 minutes of the game, put together a 69-yard scoring drive to tie the game with 2 minutes 18 seconds left. Matt Kalcevich hit Guillermo Esparza in the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown pass and then Kalcevich ran for the two-point conversion to tie the game.
A tie would have clinched a playoff berth for Brea (6-3, 3-1).
Defense dominated the first three quarters with Valencia leading at halftime, 7-0, on Jimmy DiDido’s two-yard touchdown run with 26 seconds left in the second quarter.
